From Diagnosis to Advocacy: Ava Sanders Joins the One Voice Arkansas Junior Board

Updated: Nov 9

Ava Sanders, Junior Board Member of One Voice Arkansas

One Voice Arkansas is proud to introduce Ava Sanders as a new Junior Board Member of One Voice Arkansas. She joins a group of driven, compassionate youth leaders dedicated to supporting families impacted by Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS).

A Voice Shaped by Experience

Ava’s journey with apraxia is not just part of her story—it’s her motivation. Diagnosed with CAS just before her third birthday, Ava spent years in speech therapy learning how to communicate.

“I understand the struggles that come with this diagnosis and want to advocate for other children to have the same opportunities for success I’ve had,” she wrote in her application.

Her voice is not only one of understanding but also of resilience—and now, leadership.

Making a Difference Through Service

Ava attends Little Rock Christian Academy and is deeply involved in her school and community. She volunteers with iCan Dance, where she supports children with and without disabilities in learning to express themselves through movement.

She also serves as the social media manager for the Hearts for Healing club at school. This year, Ava helped recruit over 70 new members to create care packages for kids in local hospitals—an incredible example of her ability to lead and inspire.

Ava’s Strengths That Strengthen the Mission

Ava brings skills that are key to successful advocacy, including:

  • Event Planning

  • Social Media Strategy

  • Fundraising

  • Peer Outreach

She is ready to put these skills to work, helping families and children affected by CAS feel seen, supported, and celebrated.

What the Junior Board Is All About

The Junior Board at One Voice Arkansas empowers young leaders across the state to take meaningful action. Members serve a one-year term, attend monthly meetings, and contribute 3–5 hours per month to:

  • Plan and host community events

  • Support youth-led advocacy campaigns

  • Promote awareness and inclusion

  • Fundraise for therapy scholarships

It’s real-world experience with a purpose.

Why Youth Voices Matter in Apraxia Advocacy

CAS affects roughly 1–2 children per 1,000. While early therapy is critical, awareness and advocacy are equally important.

Youth leaders like Ava help amplify that message in their schools, on social media, and within their communities—helping to normalize speech differences and spark meaningful change.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Ava

As a Junior Board member, Ava will:

  • Lead and support social media efforts

  • Help organize events and fundraisers

  • Use her personal story to encourage and connect with other families

Her unique blend of lived experience and leadership potential makes her a powerful voice in our mission.

How You Can Support Ava Sanders and One Voice Arkansas

Here’s how you can help Ava and other youth advocates:

  • Donate to support kids with CAS

  • Attend and volunteer at One Voice Arkansas events

  • Follow and share our mission on social media

  • Spread stories like Ava’s to increase awareness

The Importance of Community Support

Community support plays a crucial role in the success of initiatives like those led by Ava and One Voice Arkansas. When families come together, they create a network of understanding and encouragement. This network can provide resources, share experiences, and foster connections that empower children with CAS.

Building Connections

Connecting with others who understand the challenges of CAS can be incredibly beneficial. Families can share tips, strategies, and emotional support. These connections can lead to friendships that last a lifetime.

Engaging in Local Events

Participating in local events not only raises awareness but also strengthens community ties. Events like fundraisers, workshops, and awareness campaigns provide opportunities to learn and grow together. They create a space where families can feel safe and supported.

Advocating for Change

Advocacy is about more than just raising awareness; it’s about creating change. By working together, we can push for better resources and support systems for children with CAS. Every voice matters, and together, we can make a significant impact.

Final Thoughts

At One Voice Arkansas, we believe that every child deserves to be heard—and youth leaders like Ava are helping make that a reality. Her journey from therapy to advocacy is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when children are supported and their voices are honored.

Welcome to the Junior Board, Ava. Your story is already making a difference. Let’s continue to work together to empower every child to find their voice.
